David G. BurkettDavid G. Burkett, M.D., F.A.C.C., F.S.C.A.I. specializes in interventional cardiology. He was the first physician in northeast Louisiana to perform intracoronary stenting, coronary athrectomy (rotoblator), myocardial biopsy, transseptal cardiac catheterization and acute primary angioplasty for myocardial infarction (heart attack). He is also the first physician in the area to perform transesophageal echocardiograms and to have implanted the first rate responsive dual chamber pacemaker. He is the only physician to have performed aortic valvuloplasty in the area.

Dr. Burkett served as Chief of the Department of Medicine at St. Francis Medical Center from l993 – 1994. He served as Chief of Cardiology and Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab at North Monroe Medical Center from 2003 – 2005.

Dr. Burkett received a B.S. degree in Biochemistry from Albright College in 1972. He graduated from Hahnemann University in Philadelphia , PA with an MD degree in 1976. He served 8 years in the United States Air Force Medical Corps, completing his medical internship in l977 and internal medicine residency in l979. Dr. Burkett completed five cardiovascular medicine fellowships:

  • University of Massachusetts/St. Vincent's Medical Center, 1986
  • UCLA/St. Mary's Medical Center specializing in interventional cardiology, 1988
  • Cardiac MRI/MRA at Washington University, St. Louis, MO , 2004
  • Nuclear Cardiology at Tulane University, New Orleans, LA , 2004
  • Cardiac Computed Tomography (CT) at University of Florida Shands, Gainsville, FL, 2006

Dr. Burkett is ABIM certified in Internal Medicine and the subspecialty of Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Burkett has been elected a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and was elected a Fellow of the Society for Cardiac Angiography & Interventions in 2003.

Dr. David G. Burkett provides comprehensive medical care in the areas of general cardiology, lipid management, hypertension, preventative cardiology and peripheral vascular medicine. He is credentialed to perform coronary angiography, athrectomy, cardiac catheterization, intracoronary stenting, transesophageal echocardiography, general echocardiography, nuclear cardiology stress testing, cardiac MRI/MRA, pacemaker implantation including bi-ventricular devices, cardiac computed tomography (CT) and defibrillators.
